Found in the east end of downtown of St. John’s, BANNERMAN BREWING CO. is a locally owned and operated brewery, tasting room, cafe and event space. Home to a lighthearted crew, we have a passion for crafting artisanal beer and sharing it with our community.
To know the story of our brewery is to know the history of our neighbourhood. Long before we poured our first beer, BANNERMAN BREWING CO. was the location of the city’s historic East Fire Station. Originally constructed after the [Great Fire of 1892](https://www.heritage.nf.ca/articles/politics/st-johns-fire-1892.php), it was rebuilt in the 1950s and still stands today at the corner of Duckworth and Ordnance Street.
But the building is only half of the story. During the Great Fire, some 11,000 people lost their homes. Displaced, but not defeated, residents banded together with nothing more than a few belongings to set up a tent city in [Bannerman Park](https://www.stjohns.ca/en/recreation-culture/bannerman-park.aspx). They weathered the aftermath of the fire and re-built the city. It’s this story of collectivism and community that BANNERMAN BREWING CO. proudly celebrates.

## Crow’s Nest Officer’s Club
The Crow’s Nest Officers’ Club [National Historic Site of Canada](https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd/page_nhs_eng.aspx?id=12932)first opened on January 27th, 1942 as the Sea-Going Officers’ Club and provided a place of rest and relaxation for Allied and merchant officers fighting the Battle of the Atlantic.
The Club retains its war-time look and atmosphere more than 75 years after Victory in Europe was declared. **Visitors are welcome but are requested to introduce themselves to the staff on arrival.**

In August 1610, Bristol merchant John Guy arrived at Cupers Cove (now Cupids) in Conception Bay, Newfoundland with a small group of colonists. By 1613, the colonists had built at least sixteen structures, including a fort, a sawmill, gristmill and a brew house. Every summer, archeologists working the dig site at Cupids Cove Plantation reveal more and more about the lives of these colonists – Canada’s first English settlers. Come and see what they’ve found today. This site is operated by The Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation.
The Cupids Legacy Centre is a museum, archives, gallery and programming facility offering interactive cultural and heritage experiences. Our story begins in 1610, with the arrival of John Guy and 39 settlers to start the first permanent English settlement what would become Canada. Museum exhibits reveal the settlers’ challenges and accomplishments and how their descendants helped create our distinctive Newfoundland culture. The Centre also features a rooftop faerie garden and regular events. Open daily from June to October.

Heart’s Content Cable Station Provincial Historic Site

In July 1866, after nine years and several unsuccessful attempts, the first permanent telegraph cable connecting Europe and North America was hauled ashore at Heart’s Content. This little Newfoundland town leaped into the history books and remained a global communications hub for over a century. The cable station opened the world to the outport men and women who worked here and remains a time capsule of the communications technology that connected us all right up to the 1960s.

Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre, 77 Main Road, Route 10
Embedded in the planes of Mistaken Point’s titled and cleaved mudstone and sandstone, exposed by the pounding of the Atlantic waves, are fossils of the oldest and largest complex, multicellular life forms – found anywhere on Earth. Known to scientists as the Ediacara biota, they are creatures that lived 575 to 542 million years ago, when all life was in the sea. Guided tours are mandatory (early May – mid October) within Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve and are available by calling the interpretive Centre in Portugal Cove South, located in the southeastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula.
Experience a snapshot of Earth’s history in fossils of the earliest-known large, complex life forms found anywhere on Earth! This UNESCO World Heritage Site reveals that moment in earth’s history “When Life Got Big” – as life evolved from single-celled microbes to complex organisms. To view the fossil beds, you must take a guided hike. Tours run from May 12 to October 17. Opened in 2008, the Newfoundland & Labrador Sports Centre is the pre-eminent sports competition and training venue in Atlantic Canada. The venue is conveniently located in the heart of St. John’s, in close proximity to hotels, the downtown core and the St. John’s International Airport, making it an ideal host for a variety of competitions and training camps.
With an unobstructed interior floor space of 64 meters by 45 meters, the centre is half the size of a soccer field, with a ceiling height of more than 10 meters. The Centre has the largest hardwood floor east of Montreal, which can be sub-divided into four equal spaces, providing it with the ability to accommodate any number of teams at one time.

The Paradise Double Ice Surface Arena opened in the Fall of 2014. It comprises two NHL-sized ice surfaces with combined seating for 1,400 spectators. Pearlgate Track and Field Complex was constructed in 1988 for the Newfoundland & Labrador Summer Games. It combines the best features for recreation, training, competition, and community events. The two story adjacent multi-purpose building includes washrooms and shower facilities, first aid room and storage room. Led by Artistic Director, Danielle Irvine, Perchance Theatre produces and presents classical theatre each summer in Conception Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.
Perchance Theatre’s outdoor performance space was inspired by Shakespeare’s famous Globe Theatre in London, England. Perchance Theatre features some of the province’s best stage actors and captures stories reminiscent of John Guy’s England, particularly what the settlers might have seen, heard, or written about in 1610.
The Peter Lewis Gallery is a distinguished and welcoming fine art gallery located in the heart of downtown St. John’s, in one of the city’s beautiful heritage properties. Opened in July 2009, the Gallery celebrates a diverse collection of original works from regionally inspired artists including Peter Lewis, whose impressionistic style details local and international backdrops with unique and vibrant imagination. His vibrant oils and charcoals are often large scale and depict the landscapes from locations in Newfoundland and Labrador, Arizona, Ireland, Italy and France and many more places where he draws his inspiration. The Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium is the first catch-and-release aquarium in the Province of Newfoundland & Labrador. Bernard Kavanagh Premises, Ferryland
The Festival offers the best in Newfoundland / Irish music by featuring local and established performers. In 1998, space was acquired in the historic Bernard Kavanagh Premises in order to pursue the organization’s mandate of developing both performing and visual arts. The original two-storey was constructed in the 1920’s and represents Newfoundland architecture for that era.
The Southern Shore Folk Arts Council (SSFAC) was formed in 1995 with the mandate of preserving and promoting the unique culture and heritage of the Irish Loop Region. The organization is non-profit and governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who along with staff have worked to bring this mandate to a reality.
A general store that supplied the community and surrounding settlements was its predominant usage. In the 1930’s a larger building was constructed on the rear of the existing two-storey building which served as a salt fish receiving and packaging operation. Over the years, ownership and usage of the building changed a number of times, which is an interesting story in itself. Consequently, the next major undertaking of the SSFAC was the restoration of the old original General Store Premises which started in 1999.

Techniplex is a state of the art indoor field turf facility for field sports. Originally established in 2006 to provide a regulation-sized indoor field to the Newfoundland soccer community to allow for year-round training, Techniplex has since expanded its client base to include other field sports.

The MUGUP Meditation Experience is a 2.5 hour micro adventure. This is an experience as unique as our island and a highlight within Wellness Tourism. It is a guided mindfulness hike to the ocean’s edge, a guided meditation with beautiful connect and storytelling as well as a fire, toutons, muffins, coffee, tea and more.

The Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre, Cape Race
The Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre at Cape Race is a replica of the original Marconi Marine Radio Station built at the same location in 1904 at the invitation of the Canadian Government. It is named for the Myrick family who lived and worked at Cape Race from 1874 to 2007, serving as light keepers, fog alarm operators, telegraphers, and wireless operators.
The sinking of the Titanic is one of the most memorable moments in Cape Race history. The Marconi station at the Cape was the first land station to answer Titanic’s distress call and helped to coordinate the rescue effort.

The Postmaster’s Bakery originated as an online micro-bakery in the back kitchen of the Bed & Breakfast. Now located at 134 Military Road, at Rawlin’s Cross, the bakery has quickly established itself as a local favourite serving up freshly baked treats and breads 7 days a week, 8 am to 3 pm.

The Screech Room is a museum, gift shop, and ice cream shop. It is packed with photos and memorabilia of our 500 year trade of rum with Jamaica and the important part Newfoundland played in Prohibition, which ended in Newfoundland 100 years ago. It is operated by Spirit of Newfoundland Productions. It is ablaze with the colours of downtown St. John’s, which reflects the location at the top of jellybean row.
